It takes what would be a cliché romantic sentiment – “I’ll wait forever for you!” – and ties it to a morbid sense of obsession, calling attention to that aspect of the sentiment. In a morbid way, it’s its own kind of forever, though that gruesome twist feels somewhat intentional. They simply state that they will one day die, but up until that point are willing to wait. However, this is a funny little inversion – the narrator states that they can’t wait forever, but not for lack of devotion. Often love songs will comment upon how long someone is willing to “wait” for their lover – forever, often. This is a clever little twist on a common romantic sentiment. That, alongside the romantic waltz sound (sans piano), suggests a ballad and wholesome, vintage romance. A lover waiting in a perfectly remote and moonlit night – it seems the setting for two young people in love to meet in secret. The song’s title is dropped right away, describing the narrator waiting by a river on a moonlit night. Right off the bat, the listener is thrown off. Buried under the guitar and stead drum beat, it nonetheless provides discordant uncertainty underneath a sound that is otherwise predictable and steady. Normally, these types of songs are relatively formulaic, with expected chord structure and a steady, uniform beat for swaying with a sweetheart.īut that opening scale throws things off. Most of the song presents as a vintage-styled waltz, drawing to mind a schmaltzy lounge singer crooning to a crowd of a-line dresses and pinstripe suits. With all that said, let’s get to the song.įirst thing to note is not lyrical at all, it’s the chromatic piano scale this song opens with. This is a classic example of a song that plays with an unreliable narrator, revealed in the small word choices, the unsteady instrumentation, and the odd turns of phrase. Nothing is left vague, really, but when you look a bit closer, a strange double meaning reveals itself. What really gets to me about the song is the brutal simplicity of its lyrics. It all matters so much to me, filling me up to bursting to the point where I just have the urge to tell people about it.Īs I have hinted at a few times lately, Lord Huron’s “Wait by the River” was the latest song to hold the coveted spot of “song I can’t stop rotating in my brain.” So, in an interest of finally getting a chance to talk about what about this song fascinates me so, I thought I’d do a simple little lyrical analysis. When this happens, I tend to get obsessive over every little detail of the song – every note, every instrument choice, every bit of word choice in the lyrics.

From time to time, a song just grips my brain tight and doesn’t let go for weeks.
